Local Donations Pour in for Ukrainian Refugees in Poland / Images and Story by Ashlee Ruggels
A few phone calls and a Facebook post asking for donations three weeks ago has turned into a massive operation led by volunteers to bring necessary items into Poland for Ukrainian refugees fleeing the conflict.
Within hours, hundreds were gathering donations to bring to the drop-off point, which has since been moved to the vacant Sofology building in Lincoln’s St. Marks Shopping Centre due to the increased number of donations.
The Polish School Lincoln currently partners with several charities in Poland to deliver supplies to Ukrainian refugees. Ermed works both in Poland and Ukraine, helping to evacuate people from hospitals and provide immediate medical attention to the injured.
Aneta Smolarek, who runs the Polish School Lincoln, is in awe of the support she’s received since posting on the school’s Facebook page. She said: “People are so generous and they want to help. It’s just amazing.”
Aneta and Derran Brown, two of the team leaders, often work up to 15 hours a day to coordinate donations and delivery trips to Poland.
Around 200 volunteers give their free time to move boxes and organize the warehouse, with some making the journey to Poland. A van and lorry sent off Wednesday morning has now arrived in Poland, bringing around 40 tons of donations.
Derran said: “If this all ended tomorrow, there’s still a country that needs rebuilding and so many people that have nothing now. As long as there’s a requirement, we’ll keep doing this.”
